What could your neighbourhood do with £1,000?
MK Community Foundation Launches £40,000 Community Roots Project to Strengthen Neighbourhood Connections
MK Community Foundation has launched the Community Roots Project, a new funding programme offering 40 grants of £1,000 to community groups, charities and grassroots organisations that bring people together and help neighbourhoods thrive across Milton Keynes.
The initiative aims to support the local groups that create opportunities for residents to connect, learn, support one another and develop a stronger sense of belonging. Funding can be used for a wide range of projects, including community events, activities, equipment and new ideas that help build stronger local relationships. Examples could include goal nets for youth teams, musical instruments for community classes, venue hire for local gatherings or resources for creative and environmental projects.
Applications for the Community Roots Project open on 13 July, and organisations are encouraged to apply early while funding remains available.
Applications are open to eligible charities, community groups, Community Interest Companies (CICs), sports clubs and other not-for-profit organisations with an annual income of less than £500,000. Grants will be awarded on a rolling basis until all 40 awards have been distributed, with applications assessed weekly. Applicants will be asked to submit a short video explaining their idea, the need it addresses and the difference it will make in their community. The Foundation is looking for projects that demonstrate a clear purpose, address a genuine local need and have the potential to create lasting benefits for people and communities.
“Small charities and community groups form a network of roots beneath Milton Keynes, connecting people and helping transform districts into neighbourhoods. With the right support, even the smallest idea can grow into something that becomes an essential part of community life.” - Ian Revell, MK Community Foundation CEO
The Community Roots Project takes inspiration from Milton Keynes’ unique history. When the city was first developed, Community Mobilisers were employed to help neighbours connect and build vibrant local communities. While those roles no longer exist, the need for meaningful community connections remains as important as ever. Strong relationships help reduce loneliness, improve wellbeing, and strengthen resilience during challenging times.
Across Milton Keynes, volunteers, small charities and community groups continue this work every day, often with limited resources. The Community Roots Project has been designed to make funding more accessible to these organisations by introducing this simple application process.
