Plant A Tree For The Jubilee

The Queens Green Canopy – Platinum Jubilee is an environment project that will create a permanent, living tree dedication to Her Majesty The Queen. Community, Voluntary and Cultural Groups of all sizes, Parish and Town Councils and Schools are all being encouraged to ‘Plant a Tree for the Jubilee’ and celebrate with Her Majesty The Queen’s 70 years of service to our communities.

Many national expert environment organisations have been fully involved in developing The Queen’s Green Canopy initiative, so ensuring appropriate plans for tree planting are in place.   Schools and some community groups will be eligible to get free UK sourced tree whips from the Woodland Trust; many groups will raise their own funds to plant trees and celebrate. Organisations that need funds to plant trees and create a celebration around tree planting may be eligible for a grant from MK Community Foundation or the Heart of Bucks Community Foundation.  You can find out all about the Queen’s Green Canopy on the official website - www.queensgreencanopy.org

Community Action MK, Community Impact Bucks, MK Community Foundation, Heart of Bucks Community Foundation are seeking to reach out across the whole area and ensure that as many Voluntary, Community and Cultural Groups throughout the ceremonial county of Buckinghamshire (the Unitary Authority Areas of Milton Keynes and Buckinghamshire) are able to participate with planting trees and if they wish, create a local celebration around this activity.

The MK Community Foundation and Heart of Bucks Community Foundation have made grants available to eligible groups in Milton Keynes and Buckinghamshire to participate in this exciting environmental project, that will see many thousands of trees planted in 2022.

The Queen’s representative, The Lord Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire, Countess Howe is Patron of Heart of Bucks and Vice President of MK Community Foundation said, “We are seeing a surge in attention around urban tree-planting, not just because trees are beautiful, but because we realise that trees are an important part of resilience, health, and happiness. This is something the Covid-19 pandemic has demonstrated, as we seek solace from the nature around our homes and in our cities.”

This initiative is a way of helping the county’s diverse communities to come together in the spirit of unifying and celebrating the Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, much needed following a challenging year of dealing with COVID 19. Grants will be awarded from specific environmental funds and unrestricted funds held by both Community Foundations. Groups are able to apply for funds through the Community Foundations’ usual grant making rounds, with details on their respective websites.
