Mediation MK awarded emergency grant

WHO ARE MEDIATION MK AND WHAT DO THEY DO?
Mediation MK helps couples who’ve decided to divorce or separate to work through the issues arising
from their separation, so that they can resolve important matters such as arrangements for their children
and financial decisions via mediation rather than going to court directly.
Mediation MK are proud to offer support to anyone who needs them, regardless of race, colour, ethnicity,
religion, sex, marital status, disability or sexual orientation. They also offer mediation services for children
where appropriate.
Recently they’ve added two other services. Through Commercial mediation they help organisations to
resolve problems with other organisations, or members of the public who are their customers. They also
now offer workplace mediation, where they help employees to resolve issues that have arisen which
cannot be resolved by traditional HR processes.

WHAT WAS THE PROBLEM?
On 24 March Mediation MK was forced to close its office, as a result of the pandemic. Like many other
organisations, they were unable to predict the effect that lockdown would have. There were still bills to
paid, yet their ability to charge fees for their services, given that these were face to face, disappeared
overnight.

WHAT DIFFERENCE DID THE APPEAL AWARD MAKE?
Funding supplied enabled Mediation MK to pay their costs to tide them over during this period of
uncertainty. This, together with the Government’s furlough scheme was a lifeline for the charity. It allowed
for a self employed mediator to continue working, offering online support, whilst the staff of Mediation MK was
furloughed during this period.
Mediation MK have seen a huge increase in the number of Legal Aid clients (85-90%) seeking support since
lockdown.

“I am so grateful to have someone at the end of the phone or on screen who will listen to my story
and accept what I say. Mediation hasn't always been easy but it has been a much better, quicker
and cheaper option than going to court, and I'm looking forward to starting my new life with my
kids, so thank you for all your help”
