Dreamsai Awarded grant for essential hamper deliveries

WHO ARE DREAMSAI AND WHAT DOES IT DO?
Dreamsai provides services – home cooked meals, a friendly face, festive hampers - to anyone and everyone
in need, independent of their race, colour, age, or sex. Dreamsai is run and staffed by volunteers from
all walks of life, who proudly take time out of their busy lives to support their community.

WHAT WAS THE PROBLEM?
The speed at which the lockdown hit meant that a great many vulnerable local over 65s were left
without support – most critically a lack of food – and they needed help quickly. Access to online
shopping simply wasn’t feasible, neither was help from family members, who were often key workers,
self-isolating themselves or lived far away.

WHAT DIFFERENCE DID THE APPEAL AWARD MAKE?
Dreamsai adapted its model of cooking and delivering ‘home cooked food’ to that of supplying
essential item packs.
It aimed to double its efforts and to deliver to those over 65s who were now self-isolating two days a
week. We encouraged them to build a relationship with the Foodbank Xtra project in order to help to
make this happen.
The Outreach Project Hotline took over 300 calls in the first week.
The extra financial support from the appeal award meant that Dreamsai now had the funds to go
straight to wholesalers and could order sufficient to package hampers containing on average 30-35
items – bread, milk, cereals, tea, pasta, sauces, fruit, veg even toilet rolls! – enough for roughly 2 weeks.

WHAT WERE SOME OF THE POSITIVE EFFECTS OF THE FUNDING?
Dreamsai understand that pride is difficult to overcome for many, so consciously described these
packs as hampers, boxes that would be ‘wrapped with love’ and delivered with a smile, as a gift. Also,
ever thoughtful, Dreamsai added Easter cards made by local children, to brighten what might
otherwise have been a less joyous occasion.
Dreamsai volunteers are praised, described as lifesavers and promised a cup of tea and a chat ”when
all this is over”. The arrival of a hamper has a profound effect on those opening their doors to receive
them.
Essentials have reached 100% of those who requested them - with over 70% receiving two or more
deliveries - and by May deliveries will top 1000. That’s approximately 35,000 items delivered to those in
real need, and with a big smile, straight to their door.

Our emergency appeal has helped so many local community groups so far...but there are still many more who need support to deliver their vital work in these difficult times.
