AVMKSAASS awarded grant for increased support to beneficiaries

WHO ARE AV&MKSAASS AND WHAT DOES IT DO?
AV&MKSAASS is a women led charity providing support, information, advice and guidance to female and male
victims and survivors of sexual assault and abuse. They aim to empower and enable those in their
care to work with the trauma and suffering caused to them and their loved ones and to tackle not just
recent, but also historic and childhood sexual abuse.

WHAT WAS THE PROBLEM?
Enforced isolation has been difficult for a great many people. For those who have experienced
emotional trauma, in this case that of sexual assault and abuse, that isolation can trigger memories of
being trapped and with no means of escape.

AV&MKSAASS were conscious that for many this time of isolation and loneliness could mean an unravelling of positive progress. They also recognised the need to increase holding support, given the effect that the loss of face to face care would have.

WHAT DIFFERENCE DID THE APPEAL AWARD MAKE?
As a direct result of the appeal funding, AV&MKSAASS were able to meet the need for more regular
communications with those requiring support by increasing their specialist phone service contact
hours. They are currently providing support to about 215 online/telephone contacts in Milton Keynes per week.
An Online Survivor Group was also established, which now meets weekly and is a safe space for women
in need to share and support each other. Guests were guided through the online process in readiness
for the call, with emphasis put on methods of protecting their anonymity – muting audio and not
showing video - should they feel the need. Amazingly, all of the 12 women who joined the first meeting
were happy to appear on screen. This speaks volumes of the level of trust that group members have
in the service that AV&MKSAASS provides.
