On 12th February we were honoured to be invited to a fantastic project that we have funded called Cross Stitching Beyond Borders. The project is a women-only community project delivered by MK Islamic Arts and Culture organisation at Milton Keynes College.
On arrival, we were warmly welcomed into the workshop, the studio was alive with rich colour, conversation and collaboration. It was fantastic to meet some of the women who have taken part in the project including a small group of Syrian women (new settlers) & other women from diverse communities who were working alongside textile students from Milton Keynes College.
The project’s purpose is to create a space where women can meet, share creativity and build friendships alongside creating beautiful Moroccan inspired cushions for 'Art at the Willen Lake Festival', 29th and 30th June 2019 now in its 11th year!
When designing the workshops great care was taken in making sure every aspect of the project worked well for the women taking part, including wider support from translators and free childcare provision so that the women could be fully immersed in their creative projects. The participants were also lucky enough to receive brilliant support from textile artist -Jane Charles & resident artist at MKIAC- Maryam Smit.
MK College has also been involved in supporting this project, several female students from the College fashion department participated alongside the refugee women, providing additional opportunities to practice their language skills and integrate into our society.
