BLC (Big Local Conniburrow) is one of 150 areas in the UK that received just over £1,000,000 of funding from the National Lottery Community Fund. The idea behind the project is to mobilise the community to come together and decide how to spend the money to improve their community.
One of their annual events that brings the community together is the Big Local Conniburrow Family Fun Day! This year the event took place on 17th August 2019 at the Friendship Park in Conniburrow.
The Friendship Park is also one of the projects that Big Local Conniburrow have developed. Chatting to some of the residents it was fantastic to hear that the park is where a lot of community friendships have been formed.
The volunteers were up early getting the stalls ready and setting up the activities alongside setting up the BBQ to feed the masses.
The event was a great success giving the community a chance to find out more about Big Local Conniburrow and the Conniburrow Community Orchard. The Fun Day was lucky enough to host some great stalls including, curry stalls, cake stalls, a raffle, a DJ and lots of fun stuff for families to get involved in like the inflatable helter-skelter, football darts, soft play and face painting.
The event had great support from the emergency services with a chance for people to meet firefighters and look inside a fire engine. The police and ambulance service also brought their vehicles helping people understand the work that they do in the community.
A highlight of the day was seeing Julie, one of the local residents, as she “Braved the Shave” to raise money for Cancer Research! Well done Julie! What a great challenge.
The tug of war really got people pulling their weight for the community as they challenged some visiting residents from the neighboring Kingswood and Hazel Leys Big Local This has now become a yearly tradition at the Fun Day. Let’s hope as the years go on it will be something that is passed down the generations of families in Conniburrow.
Well done to everyone who was involved in organising this event.
