Mistakes to Avoid

We've received thousands of grant applications over the years, and there are some common mistakes that many groups make when filling in the forms.  To help you give your organisation the best chance of receiving a grant award, we are listing below some of the mistakes we see most often.

• Remember to leave enough time between applying for the grant and the start of your project 

• Don't forget to clearly describe what you want to do: be sure your application explains the 'what', 'why' and 'where' of your project

• Explain how you know there is a need for this project

• Don’t leave questions blank - please answer all the questions 

• Fill in the budget on the application form and make sure it supports the activity you are applying for 

• Complete the check list at the end of the application form and be sure to send us all of the supporting documents we need - if we don’t have them we won’t be able to fund you

Things to Send Us

In addition to the completed application form, you  need to submit some additional documents when applying to us for funding.  Here is a list of the items you should send, with links to some helpful templates that you can use if you need to.

  • A copy of your constitution OR a set of rules for your organisation. Click here for example
  • Information about your finances (audited accounts OR income and expenditure records. We may accept a copy of a recent bank statement from very small or new organisation)
  • An Equal Opportunities Policy OR a signed statement from your committee outlining your commitment to Equal Opportunities. Click here for example
  • A copy of your child protection policy if you are working with children and young people under 18. Click here for example
  • If you are a Community Interest Company, a copy of your latest annual “Community Interest Company Report” as submitted to Companies House
  • A list of the names and addresses of your management committee
  • Your latest Annual Report or minutes from the latest AGM
  • Minutes from the last 3 meetings of your Management Committee or equivalent
  • 2 written quotations for items over £50 or 3 quotations for any building work.
